Broken Heart Syndrome

In many legends and fictional tales, characters die after suffering a devastating loss. But even in reality people die from what appears to be a broken heart. Broken heart syndrome is commonly blamed for the death of a person whose spouse is already deceased, but the cause is not always so clear-cut. The condition can be triggered by sudden emotional stress caused by a traumatic breakup, the death of a loved one, or even the shock of a surprise party.[3] Broken Heart syndrome is clinically different from a heart attack because the patients have few risk factors for heart disease and were previously healthy prior to the heart muscles weakening. The recovery rates for those suffering from "broken heart syndrome" are faster than those who had heart attacks and complete recovery to the heart was achieved within two weeks .[4]

A study has shown that a broken heart hurts in the same way as intense physical twinge does. The research demonstrated that the same regions of the brain that become active in response to painful sensory experiences are activated during intense experiences of social rejection. "These results give new meaning to the idea that social rejection 'hurts'," said University of Michigan social psychologist Ethan Kross, lead author of the article.[5]

WSPA - Animals in Disasters Blog

Global team on standby to assist in the Pacific

WSPA’s global disaster management team is monitoring the situation in the Pacific region as the Japan earthquake of today triggers a massive tsunami. Staff from both the WSPA Central America office and the WSPA Asia office are poised to respond to animal need as events unfold across this region, including in some of the most vulnerable island states.

Considering the scale of the disaster and the impacts on human populations, it is inevitable that there will be concomitant risks to animal welfare too.

Regarding the situation in Japan, we have already been in contact with our member society, the Japan Animal Welfare Society who are on the ground and can provide us with the most accurate information. We have also been in touch with the OIE in Japan to find out what the official response plans are, and to offer our technical assistance and our experience from the Asian tsunami of 2004.

The risk to the nuclear facility presents a grave concern for people and animals in Japan, and will be one of the factors informing our decisions – as it will most other aid efforts – to send teams into Japan, so we are keeping a close eye on information about this.

We will keep this page updated with all the new information we get so do check back regularly.

Jess

Just found out from vet that poor Jess the black cat we picked up from that horrible house last week is all battered and bruised under her fur and when they spayed her insides were all messed up from taking a beating. Bastard teenage lad getting away scot free cos no proof apart from new partner saying to me he had battered lad for kicking cat. Lad has done a lot more than kick the poor cat. Fate sure sent that cat our way! times like this i wish i knew a few more swear words :-(
